women's day is an international event commemorated by the united nations member states. It is commemorated on 8th march every year. women's day is a product of the struggle by progressive women who fought for social change in society to participateon equal terms with men. their struggles were mainly against exploitation, social injustice,militarism and imperialist wars. women's struggles were therefore, campaigns for peace, democracy, social equality and women's achievement. initially, many countries celebrated women's day on different days. in 1975, the UN declared international women's year and recognized march 8th as a day on which all member nations should recognize and honour women. in East Africa the women's movement started in the 1940's. the struggles revolved around inclusion in the taxation system, political, representation, formal employment opportunities, right to educate and resistance against domestic violence
