Shortage of doctors is a problem that affects most African countries. Few people study to become doctors due to number of factors like high qualifications needed, the time taken to finish the course, the big amount of tuition to complete the course. In addition those who manage to become doctors get disoriented by the small pay, poor working conditions so they opt for jobs abroad where they are given a better pay (brain drain) leading to shortage of doctors in most African countries.

The Nigerian health care system is continuously faced with a shortage of doctors known as "brain drain", because of emigration by skilled Nigerian doctors to North America and Europe. In 1995, an estimated 21,000 Nigerian doctors were practising in the United States alone, which is about the same as the number of doctors working in the Nigerian public service. Retaining these expensively trained professionals has been identified as one of the goals of the government.
