A clinical thermometer work on a condition of expansion and contraction. Whenever matter is heated, it expands. Thus when the bulb of the clinical thermometer is placed in the body parts that maintain temperature, it will force the liquid in the clinical thermometer to expand. When the liquid most especially Mercury or alcohol is heated by the temperature of the sick person, it expands with in the thermometer hole and can be taken from the calibration on the the thermometer. When the thermometer is again removed, it cools down and the liquid inside either Mercury or alcohol contracts again. The process continues when ever it is used in the above way.
