Some stories tell that Kampala was named for deerlike animals called impala that once lived on its hills. Kampala’s Uganda Museum is known for its large collection of traditional musical instruments. Also notable are the tombs of the kings of Buganda, called the Kasubi Tombs, which are on a hill overlooking the city.

Yes the city Kampala is located on hills ,but earlier before it was agrazing area where the impala lived but as people kept on increasing settlements suddenly the animals kept away from the public conclusively we can say Uganda is a home very many species of animals, but the impala is special to Uganda given the fact that it's reflected on the national emblem is significant

How the city evolved out of swamp for impala.
-Arab traders from Zanzibar set foot in Buganda in the 1840s, using established trade caravans. Trade was conducted at the King’s Court. The Arabs came for ivory and slaves in exchange for their firearms and cotton clothes.

-Before 1890, Kampala acted as the centre of interstate trade with other Kingdoms. Buganda exchanged crafts, barkcloth and foodstuffs for millet, pots, iron tools (hoes and spears), cattle products from Bunyoro and Ankole.

-The name Kampala comes from a Impala, a type of antelope which used to graze on the slopes of Mengo. The name ‘Hill of the Impala’ was given specifically to the hill on which Captain Fredrick Lord Lugard, a British administrator, established his camp (Fort) on December 18, 1890. The Baganda translated Hill of the Impala into kasozi k’Impala (pronounced ka Impala and eventually ka mpala).

Exactly. Those animals were so many on the hill where they used to live and eventually the colonialists gave the place ka mpala meaning the hill belonged to impala animals.

I knew it because most people gave names to places according to what took place in those areas. This could probably be peoples' behaviours peoples' Economic activities, Animals in those areas, type of food people grew most etc.

A couple of days ago the Lord mayor launched a sculpture of the impala in the city stating that Kampala was named after a wild animal known as the impala. This was done in a bid to promote tourism in the country. Personally I didn't know before. Did you know ? Yes or no ?

How do you vote?
