Just because we can count something as climate performance does not mean we should. Both approaches from the two major parties have their own issues

Broadly, carbon credits work as a certificate permitting someone to emit greenhouse gases. To assess Australia's performance, it's important to understand the differences between the types of certificate. Just because we can count something as climate performance does not mean we should. The federal environment department says it is not aware of any countries other than Australia planning to use controversial “carryover credits” to meet international climate commitments.

The comment, at a Senate estimates hearing on Monday, comes as the Morrison government rebuffs calls from international leaders, analysts and activists for it to abandon the use the credits to meet its 2030 Paris emissions goal.

The government says it has earned the right to use the credits, which represent the amount of carbon dioxide by which Australia has “beaten” the targets set under the previous international climate agreement, the Kyoto protocol.

Carryover Credits comes from Kyoto Protocol 1997 where Nations who reduced their emissions targets more then original target have accumulated Carryover Credits being the difference which can be used to automatically deduct the emissions target for 2030 as was never specified if was allowed to be used for 2016 Paris Agreement as those several Nations only need meet the of difference of 2030 emissions target after getting automatic deductions off the Carryover Credits from 1997 Kyoto Protocol so should Carryover Credits Continue into reducing 2030 Emissions Countries Targets?
