Maundy Thursday: origins and meanings

Maundy Thursday is a Christian feast which is celebrated on the Thursday before Easter.
This is called a movable feast since the date of celebration of Easter varies every year and therefore that of Maundy Thursday as well.
On this day, Christians celebrate the institution of the Last Supper or the Eucharist, the last meal of Jesus with his apostles before he is arrested.
During mass, a ceremony is unavoidable that day, that of the washing of the feet (rite of the "Mandatuum"): twelve people have their right feet washed by the priest during the evening mass.
This ritual is a reminder of what Christ did at the Last Supper, he himself washed the feet of his twelve apostles.
Maundy Thursday is the first stage of the Paschal Triduum, which celebrates the Passion of Christ and his resurrection
